As Bill Cosby says, “…intellectuals study things that people do naturally”. And so it is with lacing your shoes, or boots for that matter. What some might consider a very natural activity has been “studied” by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, and they have concluded that “certain lacing techniques for shoes can prevent injuries, alleviate pain, and relieve foot problems”.
They have documented these various techniques in their “Lacing Techniques for a Proper Shoe Fit”. (The Propet shoe company has the info with more detailed illustrations.)
The AOFAS’ site contains a wealth of footwear information, including:
- How to select the right athletic footwear for you.
- How to Tape a Toe
- And a guide to Foot Fitness for Life
Hit the Trail also offers boot lacing tips that address the toe-mashing impacts from “…the relentless downhill grades ” in Grand Canyon country.
